Snowy Moon (English title: Snowy Moon) is a Chinese series that seamlessly blends vampire, romance, and mystery genres against the backdrop of the Republican Era. The story begins when Shen Zhiheng (played by Gao Weiguang), an immortal young vampire, is nearly killed by a group of soldiers but is saved by Mi Lan (played by Ouyang Nana), a blind girl with a pure heart. This encounter changes both their fates: Mi Lan miraculously regains her sight, and Shen Zhiheng's secret is revealed. From then on, they must cooperate to survive amidst enemies and numerous obstacles.

Plot Summary (No Spoilers)

The series opens with a confrontation between Shen Zhiheng and a group of soldiers hunting him. Mi Lan, a blind girl living with a wealthy family, hears the sounds of battle and decides to help, unaware that he is a vampire. After their meeting, Mi Lan miraculously begins to see, but at the cost of becoming entangled in the world of vampires and the dark secrets behind Shen Zhiheng's immortality.

Other key characters include Situ Weilian (played by Winwin), Mi Lan's friend who is a vampire doctor, aiding the pair in times of crisis. The main antagonist is Jin Jingxue (played by Maggie Huang), a mysterious woman with power and a complex relationship with Shen Zhiheng. The story unfolds as past relationships are revealed, and a struggle to protect loved ones amidst the conflict between humans and vampires ensues.

Acting and Characters

Gao Weiguang as Shen Zhiheng excellently portrays the coldness and tenderness of the young vampire. His emotional expression through eyes and body language allows the audience to feel his loneliness and desire to be human again. Ouyang Nana as Mi Lan performs equally well, especially in portraying a blind girl who relies on other senses convincingly. The chemistry between the leads is warm and engaging.

Supporting characters like Winwin as Situ Weilian stand out with his calm and loyal demeanor, while Maggie Huang as Jin Jingxue adds tension with her powerful performance. However, some characters, such as Li Yingliang (Ren Shihao), are underdeveloped, making certain decisions seem less logical.

Direction, Visuals, and Music

The series is directed by Li Mu Ge, who creates a charming Republican-era atmosphere through beautiful filming locations and elaborate costumes. The cinematography emphasizes muted tones and lighting to enhance the mysterious mood, especially in night scenes that effectively convey the vampire world. However, some scenes may overuse zoom or effects, appearing unnatural.

The soundtrack by Chen Xuejuan is melodious and fits the story's emotions, particularly the main theme sung by Ouyang Nana, which adds poignancy to romantic scenes. Other sound effects also build tension in action scenes.

Editorial Analysis

Snowy Moon is not just a typical vampire series; it also explores themes of accepting differences, sacrifice, and the meaning of immortality. Shen Zhiheng's lonely existence as an immortal reflects loneliness and the desire for true love, while Mi Lan, though blind, sees the world's truth more clearly than others, symbolizing purity and courage.

The editorial team finds the series' strength in its immersive world-building and atmosphere, but weaknesses include a somewhat dragged middle act and some mysteries resolved too quickly, reducing excitement. Overall, it is a series suitable for those who enjoy intense drama and romantic fantasy.

Verdict

If you enjoy vampire series focusing on drama and romance in a retro setting, Snowy Moon is another must-watch. Although some parts may be a bit slow, the intense performances and beautiful visuals will keep you following until the end.
